Refrigerator call-outs rise sharply from May onwards, and it is not coincidence. Higher ambient temperatures expose weaknesses that a unit can hide comfortably in winter.
Longer run times expose weak components
A compressor that ran half the time in January may run almost continuously in July. Start relays, fan motors and thermostats that were marginal now fail outright, simply because they are being asked to work far more.
Door seals matter more
A gasket that leaks slightly lets in warm, humid air every minute of the day. In summer that means condensation, frost build-up in the freezer and a compressor that never rests. Replacing a gasket is one of the highest-value refrigerator repairs there is.
Condenser heat has nowhere to go
Refrigerators need clearance to shed heat. In a warm kitchen with the unit pushed against a wall or built into tight cabinetry, the condenser cannot reject heat effectively and cooling performance drops on precisely the days you need it most.
Ice makers and water lines
Demand on ice makers peaks in summer, and that is when marginal inlet valves and partially blocked filters reveal themselves as low or no ice production.
Simple prevention
Before summer: clean the condenser coil, check the door seal grips a sheet of paper firmly all round, leave clearance at the back and sides, and make sure the internal temperature is set appropriately rather than colder than necessary.
